An Evening With Sylvester Stallone

Action hero movie legend Sylvester Stallone, star, writer, producer and director of almost 90 movies and one of Hollywood’s biggest box office draws, is to get up close and personal at a unique event, An Evening with Sylvester Stallone, at The London Palladium on Saturday 11 January.

One of the most popular movie stars of all time, from the breakthrough Rocky in 1976 - nominated for 10 Oscars - to his latest blockuster movie franchise, The Expendables, Mr Stallone will share private moments and insights from his outstanding career as he is interviewed on stage by Jonathan Ross.

There will then be a Q & A session with the chance for members of the audience to ask questions.
An Evening with Sylvester Stallone is produced by Rocco Buonvino and Joe Ricotta. In June 2013, Mr Buonvino presented the sold-out, acclaimed An Evening with Al Pacino at the London Palladium.

Sylvester Stallone has established worldwide recognition as an actor, writer and director since he played the title role in his own screenplay of Rocky, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Rocky grew to a franchise of five sequels and in 2006 Stallone concluded the series with Rocky Balboa, a critical and audience success which resolutely confirmed both Stallone and Rocky as iconic cultural symbols.

In more recent times, Stallone wrote, directed and starred in Rambo, which continued the saga of Vietnam vet John Rambo 25 years after the debut of Rambo: First Blood. His most ambitious project, the action thriller The Expendables, which he wrote, directed and starred in, saw him hire an all star action cast including Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Eric Roberts, Dolph Lungren and Steve Austin – as well as Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It opened to Number One at the US Box Office – making Stallone the only actor in Hollywood history to open a Number One film across five decades.

In 2002 Stallone was honored by the Video Dealers Software Association when he was presented with the “Action Star of the Millennium Award” at the Organisation’s 21st Annual Convention. In addition, Stallone’s influence and appreciation have been acknowledged worldwide. In 2008 The Zurich Film Festival presented him with the Festival’s Inaugural Golden Icon Award, which recognized his achievements as a great American Actor and Filmmaker and in 2009, The Venice Film Festival honored Stallone with their Glory to the Filmmaker Award. For the release of The Expendables Stallone was honored at the Spike TV’s Guy’s Choice Awards with the coveted GuyCon Award, presented by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

At the 2010 Comicon Convention, he was the first inductee into the IGN Action Hero Hall of Fame. The Expendables 2, the highly-anticipated sequel opened to Number One at the US Box Office. Stallone recently appeared in Bullet To the Head for director Walter Hill and Escape Plan co-starring with Arnold Schwarzenegger. At Christmas 2013 he will be seen starring in Grudge Match co-starring with Robert DeNiro. Most recently he was on location in Bulgaria shooting Expendables 3 with many of the original cast as well as with Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford and Antonio Bandaras. In March, 2014, Rocky the Musical will open at The Winter Garden on Broadway.

The musical is based on the original film written by Stallone with music by Stephen Flaherty and Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.

Rocco Buonvino has staged some of the biggest global entertainment events, from sold-out concerts to musical theatre productions and bespoke events with superstar artists. Rocco’s achievements include organising and staging the world premiere of Robin Gibb’s Titanic Requiem Concert at Westminster Central Hall and The Soldiers Charity Concert at the London Palladium.

Other musical credits include promoting and staging of shows by world renowned artists such as Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart, The Chemical Brothers, Duran Duran, and the star studded Beatles Symphonica, a spectacular orchestral concert of pure classical interpretations with special star singers to celebrate the music of the world’s greatest legendary band –The Beatles. Held at The Royal Albert Hall, star performers included Dame Shirley Bassey, Tony Christie, Beverley Knight and Susan Black.

Rocky the raconteur: Sylvester Stallone to reveal his chatty side at Q&A session in the capital

He built a reputation as the strong, silent type. But Sylvester Stallone is set to challenge his action hero image with a public appearance in London in which he promises to reveal a brighter, chatty side.

The Oscar-nominated Rocky and Rambo star will present insights from his career and answer questions from the public in an evening at The London Palladium.

Speaking to the Standard from America, the 67-year-old actor, writer, director and artist said: “I’ve had such a long career and so many ups and downs. I have a big mix of wonderful stories and colourful anecdotes.”
The Miami University graduate said people usually expected him to be as uncommunicative as some of the characters he has played.

He said: “Certain characters, mostly heroes, have to be the straight silent type, that is part of the make-up.
‘’When people meet me they’re often surprised. I talk a great deal. I consider myself something of a raconteur. I have a rather audacious sense of humour.

“I’m perceived to be this solitary character but nothing could be further from the truth.”
The misconception was understandable, he added. “It’s frustrating at times but invigorating because it enables me to try harder.”

He said the movie business was nowhere near as tough as the visual arts — an area he has also dipped his toe into with a recent exhibition in St Petersburg.
“The art world is so subjective and so brutal in its exposure of what they feel,” he said.
But he added that he was nonetheless honoured to see his paintings in great art company. “I was next to a Malevich. How did that happen?”

Stallone, who is also an avid horseman, has just finished a third instalment of The Expendables in Bulgaria, for which original cast members were joined by Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Harrison Ford. And next year he will see a musical version of Rocky, based on his original script.

He said: “Times have changed. I’m just happy they’re using my words but I realise it’s such a different world and the best thing I can do is stay out of everybody’s way and let Broadway be Broadway.”
Stallone follows in the footsteps of Godfather star Al Pacino, who held a similar event this summer. He will be in Britain in January to promote Grudge Match with Robert De Niro before the event, where he will “peel away a little bit of the mystique and some of the secrets of how movies are made”
